Juried Collages at Seattle City Hall
The Northwest Collage Society’s summer juried art show is currently in the lobby and the Anne Focke Gallery at Seattle City Hall. It includes collages celebrating summer, Seattle, and beyond. These beautiful works include representations and abstracts, minutely-detailed, as well as the boldly colorful.

My collage, “Welcome to My Universe,” is playful and boldly colorful.

The exhibit runs from July 7, 2017 to August 30, 2017.

So get out of the summer heat and into Seattle City Hall to enjoy some very cool collages!

Poetry on Buses: My Poem Accepted

Exciting news!

My poem, The Sound Soothes, inspired by my visits to Golden Gardens (a park along the shore of Puget Sound in Seattle, WA) was selected for the 2017 Poetry on Buses Program: Your Body of Water.

For this year’s theme, nearly 1,600 people entered a poem.

This popular poetry program was created in 1992 and is sponsored by public utilities and public art programs in King County and the City of Seattle.

In 2017, chosen poems will appear in the program’s web collection, be highlighted on a specific day on the web (mine will appear on October 31, 2017), remain in the collection forever, and a limited number will appear on Metro buses.

In April, a launch party for the selected poems was held at the Moore Theatre in downtown Seattle.

Below is my winning entry.
The Sound Soothes

It’s Golden Gardens
I go to

For respite
From the intense urbanity
Of Seattle
Sitting comfortably against
A huge, tumbled-a-shore tree
I contemplate the scene
Water, mountains, boats
A few people dotted along the coast
Waves lap
Lulling my thoughts
The Sound soothes
And heals
My soul

Exploring NW Art: Past Paintings & Contemporary Collages Inspired by Them

1/21/2017

Cannery Buildings, 1936, b&w block print by Fay Chong from Wikipedia.org/wiki/Fay_Chong
Northwest Social Realism and the American Scene, 1930-1950 is the new exhibition on view from January 19 to March 26, 2017 at the Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds, WA.

The show focuses on several Northwest artists and their works from the Great Depression to post World War II.  Many of these pieces are social commentaries on racial and class inequities of the period.

Running in parallel at the same museum is an exhibit of recent collages inspired by artists and/or artworks in the previously described show. It's titled, Collaged Impressions of the Northwest Social Realism and the American Scene 1930 – 1950.

I’m grateful that one of my collages (which includes paper cutting), Indra’s Net, was juried into this show.  My collage was inspired by the bold graphic style of Fay Chong and by a Buddhist metaphor of our interconnectedness.

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017

Last year I used YearCompass to review and mentally celebrate my accomplishments for 2015 as well as to decide what I wanted for 2016.

My key phrase for last year was living la dolce vita (aka “the sweet life”).

And in many ways, 2016 fulfilled that desire.
Looking back at 2016, I can say my life felt more fulfilling than in past years—much of it having to do with creating art, being juried into art exhibits, getting my art out into the world more, as well as working with supportive people at my job.

And even though my life was frequently very stressful, I also had a deeper sense of well-being.

So what’s next for 2017?  Here are my intentions:

  • Living la dolce vita.
  • Clean, tidy, and organized house.
  • Strong, flexible, healthy, and vital body.
  • Releasing with ease, joy, and love.
  • Feeling I’m more than enough just as I am.
  • Making more wonderful, wise, trustworthy, successful, interesting, generous, supportive, kind, excellent listeners and conversationalists, long-term friends who are easy to get together with for deep, interesting, and life-affirming conversations and fun get-togethers that I and they really enjoy.

Now it’s your turn.

Click here to get your FREE copy of YearCompass.

Heartfelt blessings to you for 2017!

Let’s Celebrate—Northwest Collage Society Collaborates with Cancer Lifeline

Let's Celebrate! (Housework Can Wait) collage on the right by Kathryn V. White
This year, Cancer Lifeline contacted the Northwest Collage Society (NWCS) about partnering together for an art show.

This collaboration entailed NWCS members volunteering to read short prose and poem pieces by Cancer Lifeline writing class participants and choosing one to create an inspired collage.

The art show, entitled “Read Between The Lines,” was a great success with 42 written pieces to select from and over 30 NWCS members deciding to collaborate.

I chose Judy Slonicker’s “Now” a cheering poem highlighting the beauty of nature and which also validated my proclivity for “letting curiosity take over” and doing what I love instead of housework.

Hence, my collage “Let’s Celebrate! (Housework Can Wait)" includes a huge cupcake, confetti, and vacuum cleaners with the no symbol of red line/red circle over them.

And, of course, because I committed to creating the collage I had one more reason to let my own housework wait!

Don't miss this show at Cancer Lifeline in Seattle, WA.  It includes a great diversity of beautiful collage and powerfully written pieces.

The show runs from October 27 to December 16, 2016.

Fantastical Wearable Art

9/5/2016

World of WearableArt
Currently, the Experience Music Project (otherwise known as the EMP) in Seattle has several fun exhibits:
  • Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds
  • Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction
  • Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic.
My favorite is the World of WearableArt (WOW).
The craftsmanship detailed in this exhibit is extraordinary—the designers used wood, fabric, fiberglass, paint, plastic, leather, and other materials in incredibly imaginative ways.

Wood is shaped into big hoop skirts; leather into a horse’s head and beautifully tooled spiral designs; metal into delicately-rendered, intricate body armor; felt into a one-piece outfit that uses nothing besides the felt of the outfit itself for fasteners, and out-of-this-world platform shoes. These are just a few of the wonders.

The art is all from a museum in Wellington, New Zealand which hosts a yearly competition and then creates a Cirque du Soleil-like performance of the entered pieces.

The exhibit includes an eight-minute video on three huge screens of the wearable art worn in performances.  It's so enthralling I stayed and re-watched it again as there is no way you can capture all the visuals in one viewing.

Click here to see a video highlighting past WOW creations.

Check out the below slideshow to see photos from the exhibition.
While EMP has an annoying habit of not including end-dates for its exhibitions, the World of WearableArt lists the EMP exhibition as ending by January 3, 2017.

If you love craftsmanship, imagination, beauty, fashion, and fantasy, you must see this exhibit!  It’s a rare opportunity to see this fantastical, wearable art in person.

"Spot"--Kathryn's Picasso Dog
Do you ever feel like you need some light-hearted play?

I frequently feel this in our world of rush-rush and dispiriting messaging of all that is going wrong.

An antidote that lifted my spirits recently was participating in Carla Sonheim’s 2016 Kids Art Week.  It was full of free art projects for the kid in all of us.  I made my art purely in the spirit of play.
Picasso dogs was the last assignment—making six dots with your eyes closed on a piece of paper, gluing two mismatched eyes, an ear, a paw, a snout, and a tail to each of those dots, and then figuring out how to create a dog from this was mind-bending in a good way.

I did two because this was fascinating as an exercise and the dogs I created were just so cute and weird!
I learned about Austrian artist Hundertwasser and drew colorful houses inspired by his art.  His creations remind me of a whimsical mixture of Gaudi and Klimt.

The collages I did based on the Robert Motherwell lesson don’t look much like his style, but I enjoy what I came up with.  I also like what happens when you dry brush paint on paper and then cut it into shapes.  I think I'll do more of that in the future.

And I very much enjoyed creating art inspired by Klee and by Dubuffet—in which I also celebrate my love of animals by including them in my creations.

I’m sharing photos of my art on this blog.

Bright, bold, and colorful—they cheer me up and I hope they do the same for you!

Yes, Carla’s 2016 Kid’s Art Week was just what I needed!

A Path With Art

7/9/2016

Picture
Photo from Path with Art website
Path with Art is a non-profit organization that provides access to the arts for adults in recovery from homeless, addiction, and trauma.  The organization’s website states:
“For some, the compounding effects of poverty, mental illness, or lack of a family support system can lead to a downward spiral where inner wounds manifest in homelessness, addiction, and disconnection from society. The results can be seen every day in every city across the U.S.

We believe creative engagement is a powerful means to reconnect individuals to self and self-worth. It is also a powerful tool for understanding and appreciating one other's humanity.

Creativity is both a product and a salve for the hurt places, as George Braque writes:
Art is a wound, turned into light. ”
This summer, Path with Art is inviting the general public to contribute poems to a collective art project inspired by the prompt, We Are All Here.

In addition, Path with Art is sponsoring:
  • Public banner painting parties in downtown Seattle’s Occidental Square on July 15 and August 19 during the hours of 3—5PM.
  • Free, drop in poetry and painting workshops at the same place on Fridays from July 22—August 12 during the hours of 3—5PM.

Twice this summer, a jury of local poets will select a handful of submissions to serve as inspiration for artistic banners.  These banners will be displayed in Occidental Square (2016) and the Seattle Symphony (2017).
So join in Path with Art’s public creativity call by writing a poem, painting a banner, attending a workshop, and/or by making a donation!

I’ve submitted my below poem.

On the bus
I exist amidst many worlds
One-sided, plugged-in conversations
Float over
Silent many selves
Wheels turn
Bringing me closer

2016 Etsy Craft Party at Ugly Baby and La Ru

Kathryn V. White's Cards With Washi Tape
Wow! I had a fantastic time at the June 2016 Etsy Craft Party hosted by Ugly Baby and La Ru in Seattle.  It was so much fun, I actually stayed for 6.5 hours.

And what kept me so long?

Washi tape...I couldn't get enough of this stuff.  I embellished cards, coasters, and envelopes.  I couldn't stop.  Just as I finished one card, I had to do another and then another--doing both the inside and outside of the cards and doing an envelope to go with the card.  Check out my creations in the above photo and the photo slideshow below.

And then there was the drawings for prizes.

Each hour, I eagerly waited to hear my ticket number called--as I wanted to win a fabulous prize.  Several times I was off only by one digit.  I'm sad to report, I didn't win that day.

However, I got a wonderful swag bag. And because I stayed to the end and helped with clean up, I got another one!  YIPPEE!

So thanks to Ugly Baby and La Rue for a cool event and all the sponsors who gave great prizes and provided craft supplies for our creations.  It was one fun day--even when it poured rain!

And as you can see, I'm particularly grateful to Scotch 3M for their Washi tape and Strathmore for supplying cards to embellish.

I'm already looking forward to a 2017 Etsy Craft Party!

2016 Liberate Your Art Postcard Swap Postcards
A fun time was had by all with Kat Sloma's "2016 Liberate Your Art Postcard Swap"!

This year was my second time participating and I'm so glad I did!

For several weeks in March a little gift of joy and connection arrived in my mailbox.

I especially loved it when people included an inspirational message or quote.  These really made my day!

Receiving these postcards has been a fun way to share my art and writing as well as see the cool stuff other folks are creating.

Connecting with others in this way makes the world smaller and bigger at the same time--and a great reminder of human kindness!

You can see the postcards I received in my blog photo with this post.  The middle postcard with the dog and hearts is the one I sent and the ones directly around it are the ones I received.

I also got two more from Mary--who received my postcard in the swap and was kind enough to send me one with her own art (the photo of the bike) as well as a postcard she purchased in Barcelona--now that's a person after my own heart--we both enjoy Gaudi architecture!

So thank you Kat and all the 2016 participants for making this an event worth remembering, sharing, and celebrating with others!
