I became deeply attached to the series, Army Wives.  Well-written story lines explore tough issues such as the death of young military men fighting in wars that not everyone supports, the pain of parents whose children die before them, children born HIV+, adoption, adultery, diabetes, mental illness, racism, having children later in life, marriage stresses, suicide in the military, PTSD and its larger impacts, rape in the military, and many other relevant issues.  

The characters are deftly drawn and three-dimensional.  The women are strong and intelligent as are the men.  Marriages are between equals which made the series much more interesting.

And one of the things I like best about this series is that the vast majority of characters are good people trying to do the “right” thing.  There is very little back-biting or cattiness.  I rooted for the best to happen for all of them and felt crushed when characters died or left Fort Marshall (and hence left the show).

One could look at the show as being unrealistic in terms of the mature ways the characters deal with the challenging situations in their lives and the unwavering loyalty and love they show to their family and friends.  I found it refreshing.  I appreciate how Army Wives provides positive role-modeling in sensitively working through difficult issues.  

Tragedy touches many.  Hard decisions are made.  Yet, through it all, a deep integrity and camaraderie weaves throughout the series.  It kept me coming back for more--seven seasons worth.
