How much do you know about women's synchronized swimming? I knew nothing and was engrossed in Cheryl Furjanic's documentary on the topic. Such self-discipline and self-motivation! These women are true athletes. Seriously, how many people could train this hard and be in a pool for over 10 hours a day several days a week! Synchronized swimming is just as beautiful as women's gymnastics and ice skating. And the strength of these young women --physically, mentally, and emotionally, is something to behold! It's time this athletic form got more recognition. Increase your own understanding by clicking on the cover at the left to find out more! (Affiliate link) |

"Birds" by Karen Bit Vejle
Using just scissors and papers, Danish-Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle creates amazing papercutting art. The complexity of her pieces is mindboggling. Currently, the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, WA has a show of her beautifully handcrafted pieces that range in size from under a foot to several feet long and high. The exhibit, Scissors for A Brush, lasts through June 16, 2013. If you have the chance, you don't want to miss it. Click here for the exhibition guide. And, did you know that psaligraphy means the art of papercutting? I'll need to add that to my favorite "p" word list of palimpsest, pulchritude, and philately.
Pipe Cleaner Flowers Photo by Susan Lee-Pullen Need a little creative juice, but don't want to start a big project? Think back to simpler times when fabric loops, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners were craft supplies of choice. And why not start with pipe cleaners? There is something incredibly soothing and satisfying in twisting soft, pliable, and colorful pipe cleaners into fantastical flowers and other shapes. Many thanks to Susan Lee-Pullen and her Women's Creativity Group for this fun project suited for instant gratification.
