Cosmic Explorer Paper Cut Book Plate by Kathryn V. White
Curated by Rebecca Raupach, Ex Libris is a Guild of American Papercutters show that was held at the GAP’s National Museum in Somerset, Pennsylvania from September 2020 through November 2020.

14 papercutting artists (including me) are represented in the show which includes many fabulous paper cut book plates.

My book plate with an elephant is titled Wisdom Keeper as elephants are seen as wise beings in different cultures. My other book plate is titled Cosmic Explorer and includes a turtle with stars and moon.

In December 2020, these beautiful member-created designs were assembled into a traveling show to be  hosted by GAP members at venues around the country.

Currently, the show is being hosted by ARTery at locations in Takoma Park, Maryland. From January through May 2021, the show was at Historic Takoma at 7328 Carroll Ave.  Next stop until the end of June 2021 is a storefront near a Takoma Park neighborhood Metro station.

The show will continue to other venues across the USA as additional locations are scheduled.

I hope you get a chance to see this lovely exhibit.  The variety will amaze you!

Celebrating Women's Right to Vote!

Resonating Truth by Kathryn V. White
This is the centennial year for women getting the right to vote in the USA.

Yes, it has been 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution which ensured the right to vote for women!

Washington State was the 5th state in the nation where women won the right to vote (before the amendment was ratified nationally in 1920).

I'm grateful to the suffragettes and the many other people that worked hard, struggled, and sacrificed so women have the right to vote today!

I'm also excited to share that my art, "Resonating Truth," has been juried into a beautiful show celebrating the 2020 Suffrage Centennial in Washington at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington.

This engaging exhibit was organized by the Washington State Historical Society.  All the collages in the exhibit relate to women getting the right to vote.

The show runs April 9 to November 8, 2020, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it's not clear when the show will open and close as a physical, in-person event.

For now, you can enjoy the online exhibit by clicking here.

Be sure to click on the photo for each artwork to read the artist's statement about their piece. Many of these works were inspired by courageous suffragettes and fascinating suffrage history, so you don't want to miss this aspect of the show.

Click here to view and download the exhibit's announcement postcard.

In addition, the Washington State History Museum is hosting a live, streaming event via Facebook on June 4, 2020 at 6PM to 6:45PM PST which will include looking at some of the collages in the exhibit and discussing how you can make your own suffrage history collage with images from the Historical Society’s collection.

You must have a Facebook account to attend.

You can access the Facebook event by clicking here.

All you need is paper, images from magazines or other periodicals (or even the web), a glue stick, and scissors.

It's easy. It's fun. Anyone can create cool art!

In support of the World Collage Day celebration on May 9, 2020, I'm the happy recipient of a wonderful little packet to create collages as well as an uplifting mini (2.25" x 3.5") collage by artist, Elsa Bouman.

I'm thrilled to announce that my artwork, “Summer Interlude” has been included in the Guild of American Papercutters (GAP) juried show, Places in Paper.

This traveling exhibit can be seen at two locations in Virginia:

Juried Art to Enjoy

Kathryn V. White's art, When I'm Gone, Who Will Remember Me?, is in the middle.
The Northwest Collage Society’s juried art winter exhibit is currently at the Washington State Convention Center’s Phyllis Lamphere Gallery in downtown Seattle, WA. Alfred Harris is the show’s juror.  It includes a wide variety of collages for your viewing delight.

I’m proud to share that my collage, “When I’m Gone, Who Will Remember Me?,” is included in the show. It’s about my despair regarding the large number of endangered species as well as those that have become extinct due to human actions (including certain species of rhinos). It’s also a reflection that with our own death, there will come a time in the not-so-distant future when nothing of us or our achievements will be remembered.

The exhibit runs from January 12 to March 31, 2019.

Don’t miss this lovely art exhibit and learn more about collage as an art form!

Kathryn's Spontaneous Digital Collage Using Images Provided by FreeMix
Thanks to Shelley Klammer, I’m enjoying FreeMix—a free online tool that will keep you up late making digital collages! It's very easy to use and it includes a library with a vast variety of images to choose from.

Join Shelley’s 30-Day Collage Challenge to regularly get your creative juices flowing, excavate your unconscious mind, access your intuition, and much more.

I’m including one of my recently created digital collages on this blog. I may share more here and/or on my other social media.

Now, go play!
UPDATE: Several hours after I published this post, the weblink for FreeMix was no longer working and then on May 17, 2018 FreeMix came back, but wasn't working smoothly.  Hopefully, this will all be resolved in the near future.  In the meantime, you may want to create your collages by hand and keep trying FreeMix to see if it is working again.  It's a really cool tool!

Artworks from Kathryn V. White's Solo Art Show
Autumn in the northwest often includes rainy, grey days.  It’s probably one reason why so many people are coffee addicts in this area of the country!

Yet, there’s an antidote to all this dreariness. Drop by the University Business Center to see a solo exhibit of 20 of my artworks in mixed media, collage, watercolor, and acrylics.

  • Bright and bold colors!
  • Cheerful themes!
  • Unique inspirations!

People often tell me my art makes them feel happy.

The University Business Center is located at 4500 9th Avenue NE, Suite 300 in Seattle, WA. My art is in the main reception area from October 16 through December 7, 2017.

Hours for viewing are Monday to Friday from 9AM to 5PM.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead

10/19/2017

Picture
Kathryn V. White's art celebrating Day of the Dead
Autumn brings several holidays including Day of the Dead (observed at the end of October/early November).

It's often a celebratory time to remember and honor loved ones who have died.

It's also a good time to review your own life and reflect on what you want to create and experience.

So here are some deep-diving questions for your contemplation:

  • What fears arise?
  • What losses need to be mourned?
  • What can be released to move forward?
  • What desires to be created?
  • What needs recognition and celebration?

With trees shedding their vibrant leaves and the harvesting of crops, autumn energy can aid you in your own transition and transformation.
