My “Aha” Moment to Last a Lifetime

From the 2015 Aha Moment Tour Website
I love “aha” moments and it's wonderful to hear about those same moments from other people.

These are moments when crystal clarity opens one up to a deeper meaning of life and with that clarity—the course of one’s life changes—often in beautiful and unimaginable ways.
They often contain truths and wisdom that others can relate to and be inspired by. Their packaging is as unique as the person relating them—and they are a gift worth sharing.

In 2015, Mutual of Omaha staff traveled the USA in a 34-foot long, super-cool, silver bullet Airstream trailer to talk with folks across the nation about their “aha” moments.

I was fortunate to be able to meet up with this talented crew.

La Cucaracha is a short tale about Cuca, the cockroach, who lives in the 1970s in Greenwich Village--the era of bell bottoms, flower power, and free love.

Cuca is not immune to their power, nor the tasty tidbits left by his giant roommate, the chef.

How does Cuca survive in a world that wants to see him dead?

How does he thrive and ultimately share his artistry?

For a good laugh, follow Cuca on his journey today!

Lots to love at home and in town with Cuca!

Fun and frolic, a look at life from the cock roach point of view--and maybe see a bit beyond our human façade, too. This is a character you can love.

My favorite lines: "He was respectful of books and did his best to not leave any marks. Cuca always washed his feet before he took a book dip."

This story reads like the author laughed and giggled her way through the writing, and who can resist a writer who is having the time of her life with a cockroach? Or was he, now? Hmmmmm. Sounds a lot like a great-uncle of mine!   --Marlee LeDai

(Rated: 4 out of 5 stars)

GREAT NEWS!  The San Francisco Book Review loved my book, Rumble Tumble Joy: A Journey for Healing, Inspiration, and Wholeness and rated it 4 out of 5 stars.

Here's an excerpt of the review:

"Using poetry and prose, White takes readers inside her personal journey of transformation, acceptance, and wholeness. Through the passages, White wrestles with and finds contentment with her weight, her face, her skin, and her body, particularly her thighs...

White's journey is filled with moments of joy, pain, sorrow, anger, and love, and readers--women of all ages--can use Rumble Tumble Joy to embark on their own journey of appreciation and acceptance of themselves and others..."

Do You Have Dyslexia?

3/7/2015

Eileen Simpson in her memoir, Reversals: A personal Account of Victory Over Dyslexia provides a first-hand account of what it’s like to grow up dyslectic.

Born in 1918, motherless at two, fatherless at six, and brought up at a time when many with learning disabilities were branded mentally retarded, Simpson’s life was tough.
Luckily, she had a highly-intelligent and helpful sister, an indomitable aunt who wanted her to succeed academically, and her own tenacity to not give up or in to this disorder that threatened daily to waylay her life to one of constant frustration and failure.

Simpson, her teachers,  and her family were frequently exasperated by her inability to read, her gibberish in letters and homework assignments, and her difficulties in walking from home to nearby stores without getting lost.

She got by in school by being quiet and dutiful; copying off the exams and papers written by others; and listening closely to lectures as her class notes were just as hard for her to decipher as they were for others.

Finally, at twenty-two, her future husband, poet John Berryman recognized her disorder as dyslexia.

With this identification, she found she was not alone, many people, including famous writers such as W.B. Yeats and Lewis Carroll suffered from it.  This knowledge also helped to spur her on to bigger dreams.

Within her lifetime, she earned a master’s degree in psychology from New York University and became a psychotherapist as well as a writer.  Besides Reversals, her books include: Orphans: Real and Imaginary; Poets in Their Youth: A Memoir; and Late Love: A Celebration of Marriage After Fifty.

Simpson states in Reversals (published in 1979 and republished in 1991) that one out of ten people have dyslexia, it is found more commonly in males than females, and runs in families.

Show The World Your Magic

Gotta love the phrase "Show The World Your Magic!"

It's all over the interior
covers of Daring Adventures in Paint by Mati Rose McDonough.

Showing the world your magic includes making art--which Mati can help you with, especially in the realm of collage.

And for this art magic to happen, you'll need to allow for spontaneity and messiness.

Hmm...sounds a bit like the magic that shows up when you let go of control, and allow life to happen!

If your life has gotten stale, take a baby step towards re-awakening its magic by clicking the cover above. (Affilitate link)

Do You Remember the First Time You Tied Your Shoes?

11/15/2014

Picture
Shoelaces

I remember when I was little, living in Greenwich Village in a small studio apartment with parquet floors.

I was frequently barefoot in my home, but never outside.

Too much garbage, broken glass, and hard concrete.

Too many ways to puncture my feet and end up with a bad cut—or worse—gangrene.

These were the days before velcro—when you either tied your own shoelaces, an adult tied them, or you left them untied—and risked tripping, falling, and skinning your knees.

I yearned to learn how to tie my own shoelaces—wanting that easy, smooth, flowing motion of the grown-ups.  I wanted to figure out how to go from two loops to a bow and then double-bow (to keep them from ever untying).

It looked simple—simple like the magician pulling the rabbit out of the hat or making coins appear from behind kids' ears—but not really.

A sleight of hand I longed to grasp.

As I kneeled on my left knee and hunched over my right, I allowed no one to help me.  I wanted to do this—BY MYSELF!

I seized the shoelaces of my right sneaker—one in my right hand, one in my left.

I took the right shoelace and looped it under and over my left one.

And hesitated.

Now what?

I pulled them tight.

Then I made a loop with the shoelace in my right hand.

And stopped.

What next?

I looped the shoelace in my left hand under and over—NO, that’s not it!—over and under the loop in my right hand.

And pulled tight.

One bow.

YES!

I paused and bit my lower lip.

That’s enough.

On to my left sneaker.

Same thing.

WOW!

I did it!

I REALLY DID IT!

I wiggled and giggled, full of the joy of figuring it all out.

BY MYSELF.

Rising from my crouched position, I stood taller than tall.

Grinning as I looked down at my sneakers, I felt I could fly.

Want to Write Your Memoir?

10/18/2014

If you want to write your memoir—whether for wider sharing or not—check out Memoirs of the Soul by Nan Merrick Phifer.

Phifer’s book is hefty and includes a structured, well-organized process to follow to get your story out of your heart and your head and onto the page.
Full of writing prompts, questions, and examples, this book is a wonderful guide in moving you forward in drafting your memoir.

I particularly liked the chapter titled “Choice and Chance” as they are an interplay that exists in all our lives which can be challenging to navigate.  And much of our life story (and what makes our life interesting) resides in that navigation.

Rumble Tumble Joy: A Book To Help You On Your Life Journey

10/4/2014

YEA!!!  My book, Rumble Tumble Joy: A Journey for Healing, Inspiration, and Wholeness is now published.

It includes my writings and my art. I’ve written it to be welcoming, inspirational, and helpful in furthering discussion on issues that make us feel vulnerable and alone.
Issues (such as brutality and body-image negativity) that are born from and exacerbated by distorted, digitally-manipulated images of female perfection and violence against women and girls.

It has been a challenging and deeply meaningful journey for me—from my personal explorations that gave birth to the pieces included in my book, the additional writing to broaden what I’ve written for a wider audience, the editing, the book design, the sharing with others, the receiving of praise and testimonials for my book, and the final creation of this book to be used by others on their own journeys for self-acceptance and, ultimately, more fulfilling lives.

It is my greatest wish that Rumble Tumble Joy flies freely out into the world to encourage people to move forward through tough times and towards their greater dreams.

And one way to do this is through becoming more aware and participating in healing so that we can feel more whole. I believe that as each of us grows in awareness and takes steps to heal, we help others. In this way, one person at a time, we transform ourselves and our global society to be more compassionate, wiser, and healthier.

Click on the book cover and you’ll be taken to Amazon.com to learn more about my book as well as be able to purchase it. (Affiliate link)

You can also learn more through this e-flyer and my website.

In closing, I would love to hear how Rumble Tumble Joy has helped you.

Blessings on your journey.

“I believe that any woman could benefit from reading Rumble Tumble Joy.  I sat in a room with a group of women ranging in age from 16 to 56 who all had experienced some form of self-doubt, self-depreciation, harassment, abuse, and/or regret.

By reading this book together, we started a conversation that led to both tears and laughter.

The room was filled with so many silly insecurities that it was almost comical once said aloud.  Not only opening up ourselves, but having the opportunity to hear about others who had similar feelings and shared history, was a very powerful, healing experience. And, at the end of our time together, we all walked away smiling!  What else could we do, but Rumble, Tumble, Joy!”           —Crystal Goade, Graphic Designer, Seattle, WA
“Rumble Tumble Joy provides a window into the soul of its author, Kathryn V. White, and demonstrates how one woman's story can supply a pathway of healing for many others.

Kathryn's willingness to share her process of transformation will help women everywhere to find their own voices and their own liberation from society's false expectations.

The included Reader's Discussion Guide offers thought-provoking questions to aid readers in their quest for personal awareness and growth, centered around what it means to be a woman in today's world.

I highly recommend this book for individuals as well as for study groups who are dedicated to helping girls and women gain true acceptance of themselves.”
